Bear Hat & Teether Lovey Crochet Pattern

I was so excited to share this bear hat & teether lovey pattern with you, that I made a blog! Welcome to my first post!

I LOVE making handmade sets for new babies and moms... I think they make such wonderful gifts. These patterns are easy for beginners, but still fun for more experienced crocheters. The baby hat is simple, but seriously cute! I mean... who doesn't love bear ears on a baby? And the lovey teether in three different colors is the perfect companion in this coordinated set! I hope you enjoy making these as much as I did. Both patterns are included below... so let's get started!

Bear Hat Pattern

Notes: Please remember every baby has a different sized head! These are just estimations based on average head sized charts. Please adjust for your baby accordingly!

Gauge is determined by crown width - measure your crown width after you are done increasing, before you begin adding rounds of the same stitch count. If your crown is too small/big you can start by using a bigger/smaller hook size first to see if that helps.

After each round, slip stitch to the top of the first double crochet of the current row.

Abbreviations (US terms)
ch - chain stitch
dc - double crochet
fphdc - front post half double crochet
hdc - half double crochet
MC - magic circle
sc - single crochet
sc2tog - single crochet two together (I prefer the invisible decrease method)

st(s) - stitch(es)

(Pictures shown are 3-6mo hat)

--Assembly--

Squish your bear ears flat before sewing onto your hat. Position each ear on the side of the hat, about two rows down from the top of the hat.

Using your yarn needle, and the long 12" end, sew the ear onto the hat. Don't pull your stitches too tight or you can warp the top of the hat.

Before fastening off, push your needle through the bottom of the ear. Pull slightly to bend the ear a bit. This will give it a little bit of a curve. Then fasten off and hide your yarn end in the ear.

You're done with that hat portion! Lets move on to the teether lovey!

Teether Lovey Pattern

Notes: A double crochet cluster (dc cl) is three dc stitches in the same stitch.

Abbreviations (US terms)

ch - chain stitch
dc - double crochet
dc cl - double crochet cluster
sl st - slip stitch
st(s) - stitch(es)

Materials Needed

Aran/Worsted weight yarn in 3 different colors (I used Paintbox Yarn Aran weight in Marine Blue #233, Stormy Grey #204, and Duck Egg Blue #235)
5.5 mm crochet hook
Scissors
Yarn Needle
Wooden Ring (mine is 2.75" in diameter)

Begin with Color A (Marine Blue)

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in the first ch (farthest from hook), ch 1. *Dc cl in the same st as before, ch 1*. Repeat twice more. You will have a total of four dc cls (including the beginning ch) with 4 sc st. Sl st to the first st. Sl st in next two st and in the ch 1 space.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 1 space, ch 1, dc cl in same ch 1 space. (This creates your corner... 2 dc cl with a sc in between). *Dc cl in the next ch 1 space, ch 1, dc cl in same space* repeat two more times. Sl st to the first st. Sl st in next two st and in the ch 1 space. (8 clusters, 4 ch 1 spaces)

Switch to color B (Stormy Grey)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 1 space, ch 1, dc cl in same ch 1 space. Dc cl in the next space (between your corners in the last row). *Dc cl in next ch 1 space, ch 1, dc cl in same ch 1 space. Dc cl in next space.* Repeat around. Sl st to the first st. Sl st in next two st and in the ch 1 space. (12 clusters, 4 ch 1 spaces)

For the rest of the rounds you will be doing 2 dc cls with a sc between them in each corner, and a dc cl in the spaces between. The number of spaces between the ch 1 corners will increase each row.

Switch to color C (Duck Egg Blue)
Rnd 4-5: Repeat rnd 3

Switch to Color A
Rnd 6-7: Repeat rnd 3

Switch to Color B
Rnd 8: Repeat rnd 3. Fasten off. Weave in all your ends.

Insert a corner into the ring. Fold it over until it reaches row 4 or 5. Using your needle, and color B, sew the corner down to the rest of the blanket.

That's it! You're done! Enjoy!
