Classic Baby Blanket

Crochet baby blankets might be one of my favorite things to gift! This blanket was originally made for a little girl born to a friend of mine.  I wanted a neutral blanket that was classically beautiful and perfectly soft.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find the perfect pattern... so I decided to make one of my own!

The Classic Baby Blanket is the perfect gift for any baby or expectant mother. You can add a colored ribbon for a pop of contrast, or exclude the ribbon altogether and still have a beautiful blanket.

For this blanket, I'd recommend using Red Heart Soft, but any worsted weight yarn will work. You can also try it in a different sized yarn, but it will change the size of the finished blanket, and possibly the texture.

It is also available for purchase in my Etsy and Ravelry stores as a full PDF tutorial with more detail, tips & tricks, and step-by-step photos.

Ready? Let's get started!

Materials Needed:
  • Worsted (4) yarn, about 900 yds
    • Red Heart Soft, white
  • 6mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon (3/8"), 5 yds
Terms:

  • (# sts) : number of sts in rnd/row
  • Chain Stitch (ch)
  • Double Crochet (dc)
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc)
  • Round (rnd)
  • Single Crochet (sc)
  • Skip (sk)
  • Slip Stitch (sl st)
  • Stitch/es (st/sts)
  • Repeat what's inside **
  • (xyz): worked in same stitch

Gauge:

4 x 4" square in worked pattern:

  • 10 rows tall
  • 5 repeats of [(sc, 2 dc) sk 2]

Finished blanket measures approximately:  30 x 36 inches

Body:

Begin: Ch 99, loosely (go up 1/2 hook size if needed for the chain)

Row 1: 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, sk 2 sts, *(sc, 2 dc) in next st, sk 2 sts* repeat until end, sc in last st. (96 sts)

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. 2 dc in 1st st, sk 2 sts, *(sc, 2 dc) in next st, sk 2 sts* repeat until end, sc in turning ch from last row. (96 sts)

Row 3 - 60: Repeat row 2. (96 sts)

At the end of row 60, do not fasten off. Continue to the border.

Border:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, do not turn. Work around to the left side of the blanket.

Sc evenly around the edges (placing the first sc in the same st as your ch 1), following the guide below:

  • Sides of blanket: 2 sc in each of the ch 2 sts. and 1 sc in the sc sts
  • Corners: Sc 3 in the corner st
  • Bottom/top of blanket: sc in each st across

After your final corner, sl st to the first sc.

Rnd 2 - 3: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, with 3 hdc in each corner. Sl st to 1st hdc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sk 1 st, 5 dc in next, sk 1 st, sc in next* repeat around. If your rnd ends at an awkward spot, you can adjust the number of skipped sts in a few of the previous spots. Then, sl st to the beginning sc.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Using a yarn needle with a large opening, thread one end of the ribbon. Make sure your ribbon does not twist. Weave your ribbon in and out of the hdc on "Border Rnd 2" (hdc sts). Skip over top of 2-4 hdc at a time, but stay consistent. (I chose to skip 3 each time). At the corner, leave 2 long ends. Fasten off, and tie in a bow!

You're done! Enjoy!
